Well, you say that Orkut doesn't have this functionality yet. Is this going to be an OpenSocial API method or a container specific thing? To tell you the truth, this is the most frustrating part about the whole thing. Can never actually tell whether or not a certain feature is going to need to be hacked into your gadgets for individual containers or if the opensocial API is going to support it directly.
Arne: are your answers Orkut specific or do they apply for OpenSocial in general? About time for some more documentation, I'd say.
