The reason you're seeing problems with these examples is because Orkut is currently only serving version 0.5 of the OpenSocial API. If you're developing an application for Orkut, please test the version 0.5 API samples and you should see them work.
When you will be able to use the 0.6 code in Orkut we will post in this group announcing it.
