The supported way to get this in the API is the getTotalSize() method
on the Collection of Person objects in the response after a
newFetchPeopleRequest("VIEWER_FRIENDS") or
newFetchPeopleRequest("OWNER_FRIENDS").I don't see anything obviously amiss in your gadget code.
