Great post Kevin. Re: the comment on application directories. The
following is an application directory maintained soley by open
contributors:

http://www.opensocialdirectory.org/

Note the .org - it is intended as a community wide project adhering to
the wikipedia style "neutral point of view" policy. I believe that
having a directory independent of any container could be advantageous
to the ecosystem.

In line with the words of Brad Fitzpatrick: "Nobody should own this.
Nobody's planning on making any money from this. The goal is to
release every part of this under the most liberal licenses possible,
so there's no money or licensing or registering required to play. It
benefits the community as a whole if something like this exists, and
we're all a part of the community."

The site will be completely opened up to any and all that wish to
contribute, with feeds available to all containers/directories that
wish to have them, as well as the underlying data, ranking algorithims
and metrics.

It's still early days, but I think this is the already one of the most
comprehensive application directories out there. With the addition
industry strength ranking algorithms, filters and spam protection
(chosen and implemented by the community), the result can develop to
become an extremely beneficial resource for the wider community, and
can hopefully grow hand in hand with the excellent work already done
by google, ning, plaxo, hi5 and others.

Feedback welcome.
