Ah that would explain a lot, in that case the substitutions is only a tiny part of what you'll run into :)
To render OpenSocial gadgets correctly you have to implement - gadget spec: http://www.opensocial.org/Technical-Resources/opensocial-spec-v08/gadget-spec(this includes the details on message bundles and substitutions) - OpenSocial spec: http://www.opensocial.org/Technical-Resources/opensocial-spec-v081 - RESTful API spec: http://www.opensocial.org/Technical-Resources/opensocial-spec-v081/restful-protocol - (Optional) JSON-RPC spec: http://www.opensocial.org/Technical-Resources/opensocial-spec-v081/rpc-protocol And of course the complete JS API, there's a chapter on "OpenSocial compliance' in the OpenSocial spec document which documents all of this: http://www.opensocial.org/Technical-Resources/opensocial-spec-v081 Next to that there's of course the compatibility with the 0.5 and 0.7 versions of the spec, and the upcoming changes / additions from 0.9 which includes things like templating, cache invalidation, proxied content, a new JS API and a couple of other things, the draft of which you can find here: http://sites.google.com/site/opensocialdraft/Home/ In general, we would (I would even say 'strongly') advice people to use shindig (http://incubator.apache.org/shindig) since this would save you a *lot* of time, plus the future time investment to keep compliant with the latest OpenSocial spec, but on the other hand another reference implementation is always welcome too of course (but so are contributions to Shindig!)
