I believe you're supposed to keep the data requests and the template
content in separate <script> tags, like this:

<script xmlns:os="http://ns.opensocial.org/2008/markup"; type="text/os-
data">
        <os:PeopleRequest key="owner" userId="@owner" fields="@all" />
        <os:PeopleRequest key="viewer" userId="@viewer" fields="@all" />
</script>

<script xmlns:os="http://ns.opensocial.org/2008/markup";
xmlns:osx="http://ns.opensocial.org/2009/extensions"; type="text/os-
template">
        SCRIPT CONTENT HERE
</script>
