For most open source, it has to run on 64-bit machines.
The ON code-base was never implemented to 64-bit machines.
Original case was to deliver everything in 64 bit version and 32 bit version.
-Taking any utility and making it 64-bit clean by making compilation changes
is a no-brainer.
-Big Rules should not result in boil the ocean. Changes should be incremental,
as there is a lot of stuff in ON that won't work on 64-bit machines.
-System architecture to drive towards is that all code is 64-bit clean.
The expectation is that project deliver 64-bit code.
-64 bit kernels are capable of running 32 bit binaries.
-32 bit will need continued supported for some time .
Statement of future direction:
AI: John to draft a paragraph in opinion to state:
System architecture to drive towards is that all code is 64-bit clean.
If they are not, we need to understand why they are not 64-bit clean.
There may be exceptions for research based work.
Primary principle
-Generate both 64 bit and 32 bit code for components.
PAC advice to consider what to do for components that only support
32 bit systems.
Project teams to go to C-Team for non-architecture related items.
C-team should make a rule to:
never make anything worse with respect to 64-bit cleanliness.
John Plocher to draft opinion.
-No TCR, TCAs.
-Garrett to write a paragraph / advice to PAC.
-Vote after the opinion is drafted.
