I really like this idea. However, the problem then becomes support and distribution. Playing Devil's Advocate... Support - I want Sun to support the software I use. Even the free stuff. Distribution - I can't get to the source, I don't trust the source. I want Sun to check things over and bundled it accordingly If you can get around those issues or waive them off as a tradeoff then I think you'll be good to go. Have a website that lists the free software bits, patches for specific versions if needed, compile options we suggest, etc. The compilers question has been solved with studio 11 being free.
