That's my personal feeling as well.  It is naive to think that the 
format is not relied upon.  It is sedimented into support documentation 
all over the place, including for other operating systems, where it is 
consistent with solaris.  Further ypfiles(4) ambiguously describes it to 
some degree.  To change this format would be a support nightmare.
