Project Summary
Project Description:

The Visual Panels project will produce a UI that will make
configuring Solaris services easier for both desktop users
and "casual" system administrators. Visual Panels will
enable desktop users and developers to perform common
system and service administration on their local machine.

Technical Description:
Details:

There are three major pieces to the implementation of
the Visual Panels project:

The first is the UI itself, which will be implemented in
Java using the Swing toolkit.

The second is the configuration management, which will
be based primarily on SMF. Configuration will be made
accessible to consumers (initially only the Visual Panels
UI) using Java Management Extensions (JMX) MBeans. These
MBeans will be served using the bundled Cacao common
agent container. Most configuration will be accessible
using a generic SMF MBean. Configuration which cannot
be represented in SMF (e.g. name services, ZFS) will
be accessed using technology-specific MBeans.

The third is the configurable content itself. This
consists of the work necessary to expose the
configuration via the second component, and
the UI work necessary to expose the configuration
to the user in the first. The project team will
pursue creating and integrating a sizable amount
of content for configurable Solaris technologies.
