*u & *r were used when package names were limited to 9 characters.
Since the expansion to 32-characters in Solaris 9, quite a few
packages have been integrated (especially in GNOME/JDS) with the
-root convention.

Of course, any *r or -root package is defacto Obsolete, since IPS
recombines usr & root packages into a single unified package.
