I have no objections per-se with the content of this proposal, or of its source; but I suggest that this fasttrack should be derailed because of a known future conflict with LSI's "just signed" contract with Sun to open source its own MegaRaid SAS drivers. The reason for derailment is that the case is not non-controversial; it sets the stage for an almost-certain train wreck with two incompatible drivers for the same hardware. My objections would be satisfied by the two parties (Alan/James/David and TBD at LSI) getting into contact with each other and working out an architectural plan for how to proceed that does not drive us into the corner of having two incompatible drivers in the system for the same hardware. Once we get over the problem of our left hand not talking with our right hand, I'm sure that this team and the LSI folks will be able to figure out the right thing to do. -John The previous conversations on this topic involve hundreds of messages; I've excerpted the key ones here: http://mail.opensolaris.org/pipermail/driver-discuss/2007-December/004775.html David Gwynne loki at animata.net I have written a driver called mfi that supports the LSI MegaRAID SAS ... http://mail.opensolaris.org/pipermail/driver-discuss/2007-December/004776.html Garrett D'Amore garrett at damore.org A bit of background here. 1) David's driver is really very, very clean. A nice bit of code. 2) LSI has a Solaris driver for this bit of hardware. It is closed source, and it includes functionality that no one else can easily reproduce because LSI does not give out programming specs. 3) LSI and Sun are in negotiations of trying to bring the LSI code to OpenSolaris http://mail.opensolaris.org/pipermail/ogb-discuss/2008-January/003947.html Alan DuBoff alan.duboff at sun.com ... Just before Xmas the agreement was received, signed by LSI to get the driver putback, and this was about the time this thread started. The LSI driver is open source,... You will see this putback within the next month I'm told, as of just before Xmas, it is final.
