Rick, Although MMS may provide some tape library operation functions, MTX is different from MMS because:
- MMS aimed to manage tape libraries/drives/cartridges only, while MTX manages tape devices and CD/DVD jukeboxs. - MMS is designed as a framework providing universal a tape device interface from all of tape devices it manages, based on IEEE standard 1244. Clients consume MMS through API functions and MM protocols. MTX is designed as a set of small command line tools, which look like extension of original mt. Clients uses MTX by invoking the commands directly from script. Bacula and Amanda are two of famous backup solutions which use MTX. MMS to MTX is like a commercial backup solution to command cpio.
