You actually mean SLOG (ie Separate Log Device) not ZIL. The ZIL always exists and is per ZFS dataset. In the general case a ZFS SLOG doesn't require a UPS at all it requires a device that is faster than you main pool disks and one that is persistent when the operating system stops without warning for example on a panic or on power loss without a system UPS. The DDRdrive X1 when used as a SLOG for ZFS may well require a UPS. -- Darren J Moffat
