kstats are scriptable (you can get at them from C, Perl5, Python, and shell scripts), so they are more convenient, but then, the actual kstats are typically either not documented or at best Uncommitted. Listing the CIFS kstats as Volatile and documenting their meaning would be useful, if you can help it.
