* Is it possible (or is there precedent) to have a _commitment_
to deliver this (or anything) in /contrib?

* If so, could whoever commits them to /contrib incorporate
some notes as to (in)compatibilities with the old versions?
I think that might reasonably serve to address any undiscovered
usage of the old commands, allowing people to transition to their
replacements more easily.
