Most such code is developed for Linux these days, and uses different
approaches (primarily parsing uname output) to determine the machine and
model type.
I've never seen a script that would misbehave if these tools were
absent. (I've seen scripts that would misbehave if they existed and
returned a false positive, but even those cases are rare... I think
autoconf in particular does not use them.)
