IAM
======
Name: OpenSolaris Text Installer
Submitter: [email protected]
Owner: [email protected]
Exposure: open
SUMMARY
=======
The Text Installer is a mouseless, screen-oriented installer
designed
for use on SPARC and x86 systems that may not have graphics
support such
as many server-class machines.
ISSUES
======
alanc-1 What happens for IPv6 if static network configuration is chosen?
alanc-2 Are any privileges, roles or other user_attr settings made for the
user account created during installation?
seb-1 There was a great deal of discussion surrounding PSARC
2010/164, most of it related to how the installer would use
its exported interfaces and deal with the two network/physical
instances. Those details are missing from the design, the
spec, your imported interface table, and your list of
dependent cases. Please provide this information for
commitment.
seb-2 Design section 3.3: This section doesn't make sense to me
given the other networking configuration sections in this
document and the associated spec. I have a feeling that this
is a stale section that dates back prior to the filing of
2010/164, and that this is where many of the clarifications
requested by seb-1 will go.
seb-3 Spec, "Network": This section states that "This screen applies
only to the the first wired ethernet connection found.", but
the following sections describing a user interface to select
which NIC is to be manually configured is in conflict with
this. Please clarify and fix.
seb-4 Spec, "Network": The terms "active" and "inactive" are used to
describe IP addresses and NICs. What does that mean? There
is also no possible way to accidentally configure bridging as
is insinuated here. Clarifications are needed in the spec.
seb-5 Spec, "Network": "If the user chooses "Automatically" all NICs
are set to DHCP." I'm confused by this since NWAM provides a
fully automatic network configuration using DHCP over all
available wired NICs by default without intervention of the
installer. How id this a sensible manual configuration?
seb-6 Spec, "Network": The handling of wireless NICs is confusing
here. Are they configured by the installer or not? I would
suggest you simply stay away from wireless configuration
altogether.
seb-7 Spec, "Manually Configure: NIC": Please specify what you mean
by "router/gateway address is dynamically set". How is it
obtained? Once obtained, is it statically configured, or
dynamically configured? Is the gateway only displayed in the
UI for informational purposes?
seb-8 Same question for "DNS IP address" and domain name (I assume
you mean DNS server IP address).
seb-9 Given the current controversy surrounding the "initial user",
I think this case needs to be specific about the properties of
this initial user. Will sudoers be populated? Will the user
be part of any execution profiles by default?
mhm-01 User and root password not required during install. This
is a different behavior then today's Solaris 10 installer.
I remember a fast track discussing this but can't
remember the rationale for this.
mhm-02 User can run the install in debug mode from the shell.
Am assuming that is -d option. Are there other options
for /usr/bin/text-install? Is there a man page?
THE NEXT STEP
=============
Needs spec
Do what was agreed upon in 2010/067 regarding initial user
Make text-install uncommitted and put in /usr/lib
Vote (by email) once spec is updated
