This is in the Intel-supplied ACPI CA code; we're aware of the issue and have worked with Intel to resolve this issue, which was done so by packing bitfields into unsigned chars as described. The fix is in the process of integration into Solaris.
While it appears ominous, review of the existing code indicates a relatively low impact, I would suggest that the assumption of "plenty of bugs" is hasty. There's one known problem in which a specific model of Toshiba notebook with a specific version of BIOS panics.
