I would hope _this_ particular bit of minutiae  would  be taken care of
automatically by whatever new SCM is introduced.

This particular annoyance isn't something that, IMO, external
contributors should be saddled with, because, quite honestly, its the
sort of thing that folks are likely to forget about and get messed up.

When I send my sponsors code, I send it in the form of diffs, so they
have to double check them anyway, to make sure that they are applied
correctly.
