So, why bother copyrighting these kinds of files at all? Why not simply
release them into the public domain? On the face of it, it is absurd to
think that Sun has a copyright on my hosts or aliases files simply because
they provided an virtually empty file with that name in the distribution...

I asked Legal for a "shorter form" for configuration files (and files
that go over the wire a lot, like CSS and XML for opensolaris.org).
I'll start a new thread later today (-code) and we can examine the
shorter block and its applicability.
