Sasha is offsite in a class at AMD this week and I'm not on the opensolaris-code email alias (yet).

I notice that in the build results there, eg,

http://opensolaris.org/os/project/onnv/onnv_build/faster_builds/times/x86/

the DMAKE_MAX_JOBS is set to just 4. For an 8 socket 16 core system
that is way too kind. Was that chosen to be closer to a more
typical workstation configuration, more representative of
the typical OpenSolaris user?

No, I think that DMAKE_MAX_JOBS set to 4 might be the default because Sasha forgot to explicitly set it or change his ~/.make.machines file before doing some of the initial builds.

Setting max jobs to around 64 on a similar system (X4600 M2 16 cores @ 2.6GHz and 64GB) has full nightly (default developer.sh options - debug, non-debug and lint) completed in 45-60 minutes. Who cares if the load average is in the
hundreds - that is what FSS is for on a shared system :-)

All of the experiments on the G4 since then have been with DMAKE_MAX_JOBS set to 64.
