I would like to use ZFS over something like Google Mail. I don't know if it would be not too slow but I would like to try something like this. Maybe ZFS could also be encapsuled into a FTP service. Each disk block could be a file or something like this.
It would be better to code this kind of disk drivers in user space, because it would require user-space libraries (HTTP, HTTPS, FTP requests...). In kernel space I don't have access to high level API system calls.
