I tend to do something like this in my drivers already using vmem_alloc/free; I assume you're envisaging doing something along similar lines? I guess you might want to add functionality to allow particular numbers from the arena to be reserved such that minors that are used for the filesystem nodes can be easily excluded from the arena.
