I also keep running into this problem, both with our Myrinet products, and with "convergence" functionality on our 10G NICs. Your proposal gets a +1 from me. One question -- what about GLDv2? Doesn't it also try to manage the minor nodes? Since GLDv2 is the only supported API for 3rd party drivers, it is important to support it.
