"-a" is a little odd.  It is intended to produce noise on the system
audio output as packets are received, and I can't say I've seen it used
much.

Did you mean something else, such as "-r" to avoid reverse name resolution?

At a guess, VMware might not allow you to use promiscuous mode in any
meaningful way.  Or maybe there's just no DHCP traffic on that interface.

You may want to contact networking-disc...@opensolaris.org.  The
opensolaris-code list is generally for discussion of source code issues
in OpenSolaris, not for specific problems with networking commands, and
I suspect that few of the networking folks hang out here.  (And thus
your message isn't reaching its target audience.)
