just to document the problem here: when I rebooted the kernel with 'reboot -- 'kernel.mine/unix'' the file /platform/i86pc/boot_archive was updated to be 20bytes. All I did to recover from this failure was to boot in failsafe mode, mount my root partition and remove /a/platform/i86pc/boot_archive. Boot again into failsafe mode and select to update the boot archives. Next reboot worked fine.
