'The ARC made us do it' ;) Seriously though, I think the current packaging scheme is pretty limiting and darn frustrating at times [as Shawn has already mentioned]. Apart from the -root, -share, -devel stuff, we also tried to preserve package names and mark them as a stable interface, so we have SUNWgnome-base-libs which is a collection of random libraries that can be swapped out easily if a library is deprecated and dropped without any harm of changing the package name. I think if we had a good package management system, then I'd probably care less about 100's of packages installed on my machine eg. apt-get gnome-panel automatically fetches the necessary panel requirements.
