What if we were to stop and look two years and five years down the road?

Is there not a clear need or a desire to have a community based non-OS
software base that will complement the OpenSolaris initiative?

I think that we need to not look at closed and internal processes but
head towards open and participation based directions. The long term
future of OpenSolaris and the Solaris corporate edition will always
require non-OS components that should be readily and easily available.
This should include GNOME and KDE and the future RayStar desktop ( I
made that one up for my long term thin client dreams ) and these
software components need to be developed in an open environment with
open participation and consistent bug tracking.

What really is there to stop this from happening for a better long term future ?

If it can be done on a small scale ( Blastwvae ) then lets take that
as a prototype and go large scale with better processes and better QA
and long term vision and planning.
