It would be even better to check the media using the same optical device that is
going to be used during installation.

It turns out to be the CDROM.
It's a plain 40x CDROM, obviously cannot handle those "high/ultra speed" CD-RWs I am trying to use.
readcd generated many I/O errors.

In the DVD/CD-RW drive where these CD-RWs were orignally burned, no I/O error is detected.

BTW I downloaded the latest cdrtools source, compiled and installed Solaris GA, readcd works fine without 'volmgt stop'.

Thank you guys for the suggestion.

I assume the bad USB mouse/keyboard responding time could be due to these I/O exceptions?
Oddly, I didn't have this problem with the first (same) CD-RW, only after rebooted from disk and started installing CD-2. and as I mentioned, bad response even when the CDROM drive light was off and nothing was going on.
Anyway, I'll find out when I try again with the other drive, later.
