<Casper H. Dik: After doing extensive work on making Solaris of the x86/x64 variety more mobile and trying to make it the laptop of choice withing Sun (not there yet, but in much better shape than some time ago), I'd like to propose the
"OpenSolaris Laptop Community" Laptop, I think, is the name which best covers the subject, which would initially discuss subjects such as:> !!!!!! I bought an HP ze2000 notebook specifically for testing Solaris 10. A couple of days ago, I saw the only Turion64 based notebook ad on CNN, and that's the same machine as I have. I have been trying to find a workable Linux notebook for more than five years now (& if I had been successful, I wouldn't have been interested in Solaris). One of key stumbling blocks is the lack of STR. For every five minutes working on my machine, I probably spend 10 minutes thinking. SRT is a must when running in battery mode. On a WinXP machine, when I close the lid, the power consumption goes to zero (i.e., < 500mW). There are only one or maybe two families of notebooks that I know of where STR works in Linux. One of them is IBM ThinkPad, and there, as I was told, the power consumption is still around 5W during STR. My advice to you in this endeavor is, don't be too ambitious. Just focus on one or two families of notebooks. The Acer Ferraris seem to be the favorite of most Sun engineers. The HP ze2000s are good candidates because they are cheap. STR/Linux is more likely to work on Intel's Centrino machines, thus, since your resources are limited, you probably should avoid them (so as to highlite the advantage of Solaris). STR is also important, though not as critical, for desktops. Also, while Solaris is free for downloads, Sun can expect to make a minimum of $120/yr for updates. If the items you listed can be successfully implemented, many potential Solaris notebook users, including myself, will be happy to sign the service contract with Sun.
