Solaris device drivers are far more than the Laptops drivers. The purposes to have such a drivers is trying to make the Solaris competitive at the device support with other OSes.
Drivers common on SPARC,x86,x64 like mpt and other existing drivers on OpenSolaris; Drivers x86/x64 only, most of which are to support the non-Sun machines like popular PCs and DELL servers. Of course, the drivers on laptops are also included. But as you said, these drivers are unique to Laptops, so it's better not to split these driver from the laptops community. It makes senses. IMO, we'd better have an individual community for device driver, which will leverage from SPARC, x86, x64. This way, any questions, bugfix, RFE and contributions to drivers could easily go to a specific communtiy w/o interweaving w/ some Laptops unique characteristics. It's more like a general purpose community than that of Laptops or PowPC including some unique drivers as is. FYI, the device driver is really a hot request from outside users of OpenSolaris: http://www.theregister.com/2005/08/16/solaris_x86_not_too_shabby/page4.html This message posted from opensolaris.org _______________________________________________ opensolaris-discuss mailing list [email protected]
