I've cc'd the discuss alias in case there is anyone there, not on the marketing alias, that would like to participate in this discussion.

There has been much discussion about a mascot for OpenSolaris and a competition/contest/voting system within the community to create one. We have a couple of options here, and I'd like your thoughts.

Option 1 (aka Mascot Contest)
We open up the creation of the mascot to anyone who would like to get involved. We work on contest rules, criteria, judging, timeframes, prizes, etc as a group and off we go.

This would be fun. We could find some real artists in our midsts? Create something completely original and unique.

Option 2 (aka Mascot Creation)
Sun pays a bunch of artists to create mascots on our behalf based on guidelines created by the community. As a group, we vote and narrow down our choices and revise the "Final 3" until we have a final vote to pick "the ONE". Again, we work on contest rules, criteria, judging, timeframes, prizes, etc as a group.

Why on earth would we want to do this you ask?
Well, there are all sorts of copyright issues with artwork (like with code) and we need to be cautious of having anything that is copyrighted put into a mascot that Sun then offers out publically. It puts Sun in a bad position Since we aren't currently a foundation, that is a concern we need to be aware of. There are advantages to this method of creating a mascot as well. We may get something very professional and that we wouldn't have otherwise thought of - and that we are sure isn't copyrighted by any other party.

I have a few questions.
Which way would you like to go?
Is now the time to do this?

Please move this discussion over to the marketing alias. I just wanted to make sure that the people who cared about this issue had an opportunity to get involved - and there isn't a lot of traffic on the marketing alias (yet).

Thanks for help.
Sara
