AFAIK, you must configure the SATA controller to emulate
an old (P)ATA controller; then the Solaris ata driver (which
probably knows nothing about SATA - at this time) will be
able to use the SATA disk in compatibility mode.

I've no idea which chipsets allow their SATA controllers to
be configured in ATA emulation mode. Probably those that
appear in /boot/solaris/devicedb/master:

pci1095,3112 pci-ide msd pci ata.bef "Silicon Image 3112 SATA Controller"
pci1095,3114 pci-ide msd pci ata.bef "Silicon Image 3114 SATA Controller"
pci1095,3512 pci-ide msd pci ata.bef "Silicon Image 3512 SATA Controller"

>From the ata(7D) manual page, note the last sentence:

DESCRIPTION
The ata driver supports disk and CD-ROM interfaces conform-
ing to the AT Attachment specification including IDE inter-
faces. Support is provided for both parallel ATA (PATA) and
serial ATA (SATA) interfaces. SATA support is limited to
     version 1 (ATA emulation mode).
