Hi, This project initially just started as a learning experience to understand how x86 boot and miniroot work. But later it progressed to a stage where we found that a complete distro is possible.
The initial aim was to get a GNU/Solaris distro and Solaris compatibility option was later decided to be kept as well. Another aim is to popularise OpenSolaris among the local OSS community where it is almost a non-entity as yet. The best way to do this as of now is to develop a distro locally - folks will hopefully be more interested on stuff coming out of their backyard, and done by people who they regularly interact with (I regularly attend the local OSS meets). Makes an impact. Also IMHO it is beneficial to OpenSolaris to have >1 distro based off it. It gives choice to people. Look at the Linux distros. Each person uses his own favourite distro and this helps popularise it. Lastly I had wanted to do such a thing long back with Linux. But coming out with yet another Linux distro did not seem to be a great idea. OpenSolaris is however a different ball game. >Moinak Ghosh <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > >> Some of the considerations for coming up with this LiveCD are listed at: >> http://www.genunix.org/distributions/belenix_site/belenix_background.html > >But your distri does not solve a single of the named problems. SchilliX is a great distro with lots of amazing work going into it. BeleniX has just seen the light of the day and is still quite alpha stuff. But I did compile most of the OSS packages included in BeleniX in BeleniX itself. And now I have also been able to successfully compile and run Xorg CVS tree on BeleniX - both using Sun Studio 10 and GCC 3.4 compilers.
