Noted:
1. Compare Linux (2.6.13.3)+SPARC to Solaris 10 (10/01
recommended patches)+SPARC
2. Do the same tests on a x86 or X86_64 platform with
same OS/kernels.
Specific a server or workstation (i.e. Sun Fire X2100
which is very affordable and the Sun Fire V210) for
the test. We can review a nice E2900 if you want to
get into comparing native x86_64 solutions to
UltraSPARC IV+ solutions.
Only then, will the benchmarks give you a clearer
picture to start pointing fingers.
Also, make sure you don't fall into the 'I didn't
tweak the OS for my test" scenario. Document what
environment variables were changed or non "out of the
box" modifications were done when you give a FAIR
test. Also, no US-II to AMD-64 type hardware tests
either! ;o>
Real-world benchmarks? Do a Oracle 9i/10G or Jboss
setup handling a simulated load of 400-700 users.
Whatever else you feel is on the plate....
Really, comparing USPARC vs. x86_64 hardware solutions
is one thing - and OS benchmarking is another thing.
So since this forum is mainly on the Solaris 10/11
path then start there (remove all pre-Solaris 10
'final' from your mind) and compare it with the
current Linux 2.6.13.3.
We can tally up the score in a Wiki....
