If I remember correctly, most of your problems were relating to performance under these situations (lots of filesystems). Much work has gone into improving performance; I don't know for a fact if we've tried the 40,000 filesystem model. Right now the priority is getting ZFS out the door, and our performance efforts are focused around getting individual filesystems to perform well. I can say for a fact that there is a lot of low hanging fruit in the administration tools to make various operations (listing, deletion, etc) go faster.
