As far as I have read ( I don't know where I have read it) if I ever use BFU I can't use system update tools and I can't use Sun Update Connection to update my system. Is that true?

Solaris Express does not have any patches at all. You can apply patches
to so-called unbundled products - software that is not part of the Solaris
distribution itself - but there are no released patches for Solaris Express.
That's because Express is part of the development release train. Sun's
development model is such that all fixes (security or otherwise) are applied
first to the development releases (if applicable there) and then to the
sustaining releases (currently Solaris 10 and older). So provided you
don't bfu back to a a gate build from ages ago you don't lose any security
fixes etc.

If you're BFU'ing over a Solaris 10 install (works, but since BFU only updates
the ON components you get a bit of a mismatched system) then, yes, you'll no
longer be able to apply Solaris patches. BFU dumps a number of cpio archives
over your installed software without updating the package database - when you
come to try and patch it is going to complain of a zillion checksum mismatches.
Even forcing the patch on is likely going to lead to incompatabilities as the
patch may have been built from a tree of signifcantly different vintage to the
BFU.

If yes what can we use to update system to patch for example against security threats?

I think the above answers this - running recent Express builds and only
BFU'ing forwards in time gets you all fixes.

Cheers

Gavin
