Standard != having the most users, not even by a factor of 1000^2. Standard == something documented that's been through a formal, multiparty process. Some of the GNU tools make a serious attempt at POSIX compliance, others do their own thing. GNU awk rocks; virtually unlimited input line length. GNU tar sucks bigtime. And that's the problem; the discipline to do it right is on an item-by-item basis, not something that each item is expected to satisfy as a condition of participating.
