Casper,

Exactly.  However, I do suspect that Joerg has a point.  As I was
writing this I was trying to figure out why the original code I was
working with needed this distinction.  Instead, it make more sense just
to ignore the chmod() requested for symbolic links...  Especially if
Joerg is right and Solaris ignores the protection settings anyway.
