Did you get Ireks point that Solaris is FAR behind other operating systems?
One example from our university - a real world problem we have experienced:
Think about a university which wants to use /usr/bin/ksh as uniform
login shell between various systems like Solaris, Linux, AIX - this
has become a horrible pain as the Solaris version of ksh is pretty
much incompatible to the korn shell versions of the other Unix OSes
(Solaris uses hacked ksh88, all others use ksh93). If you want to
support Solaris you have to restrict yourself to a subset of korn
shell functionality which is common between versions - which is nearly
as painful as working with the old bourne shell..

James... several YEARS ago someone from our university
([EMAIL PROTECTED]) already created a quite
painless ksh88-to-ksh93 migration plan (including a detailed list of
issues which need to be solved) for Solaris and send the proposal to
Sun, however Sun did not had any interest in such a work.
