If you have a daemon or application running, which I'd expect you do,
you could just stat() the file when necessary and skip the whole
SIGHUP mechanism.

The logic seems to be good enough, but that should be built in to the core of the application(or daemon) to monitor the file change.. so sad :-/

If you really want file changes to propagate through SMF as some sort
of "events," I think that's something that will require SMF changes as
well.

Yes, I wholeheartely incline towards the above statement..and would like to file an RFE .. ?
