Okay, I'll bite. Sounds like you you're not completely convinced about the advantages of open source software and development? I think Sun does pretty darn well out of the money/time/resources that it invests - there's a lot of other projects out there that we ship but don't really contribute to much. I'd rather like to think that it balances out. Hell, I'm sure it's already starting to balance out for OpenSolaris alone. The community figures that are posted on marketing-discuss are a fine example of the wonderful contributions both at a code, documentation, discussion, and advocacy. I can't believe how kick-ass our community has already become in such a short space of time - it's really encouraging to see. > As for developing in house, It's just the logistics of getting it done > with quality and quickly, at least for the initial stages of the > project, then it goes open source and everyone can contribute to it. > Most open source projects are developed by an individual or a small > team in the formative stages until something is up and running. I can understand this, at least until you have some sort of code up and running. I can even understand it more with the current situation over source code management and not having public workspaces available for the community. However, I do feel it's pretty unhelpful having this type of attitude. How do you think the non-Sun people feel when they see posts like this? "Oh great, Sun's doing another 'open source project' again" - by this they mean, developing the code in-house, then dumping it over the wall. That's not very inclusional. That's *not* an open development process. Sounds like you're proposing to create a CIFs group because you don't want anyone else to beat you to it, or at least that's the impression I'm getting. > However, if there's a senior software developer in the open source > community that's familiar with this area of code who's willing to > volunteer 40+ hours a week to add to our team, maintain our quality, > and speed us up instead of slowing us down, please submit a resume and > I can forward it to management for them to assess the impact of > another team member. :) Uh, why does that have to be a senior software developer? Why can't it be everyone in your group developing, maintaining and cheerleading the project. If you're really worried about management, then maybe they need to understand that community building/development [and not just code] is part of your yearly performance goals and metrics now.
