That feature was added in a Solaris 9 update release.
We don't do ftp or http but instead do https, both for the inital
install image boot and all the pkgadds.
Search for WAN boot on docs.sun.com.
Unfortunately this is SPARC only just now and depends on
OBP support for the security of the initial kernel image. Now
that we have newboot for x86/x64 it could be done there are well.
It's also only supported for installing from flash archives at this time.
