To say JDS is more 'functional' than CDE is a somewhat vague, general statement. If we define 'functional' as how "easy" it is to configure JDS or CDE, then CDE certainly has some noteworthy characteristics, as you can do *lot* with just vi and a [.]dt directory. The same cannot be said for JDS, and I've heard many times from other users that JDS isn't configurable at all (at least not to the extent of many other desktop environments or window managers).

By the same respect GNOME can be much more easily configured by scripting and can be centrally controlled with things like APOC.

There is also the gconf-editor tool which is point and click at
the modifiable properties. IMO much easier than vi on an empty
file or vi on a Xdefaults syntax file.

Or another example: zenity(1) is wonderful but it isn't anywhere
near as powerful as dtksh, however zenity(1) is much easier to
use and as a result to me is more functional (and yes I have written applications in dtksh in the past and had fun doing it).

Funny how this whole discussion is familiar to some of us if you s/CDE/OpenWindows/g s/JDS/CDE/g :-) Or if you want to go back further SunView :-)
