Juergen is absolutely right: if you're using libsmedia.so for the benefit of circumventing USCSI security restrictions, you're not using it right - it's a breach that will soon be closed by eliminating smserverd from the chain (effectively reverting what was done in S9).
Any process that wants to do USCSI, directly or via a library, has to be granted the PRIV_SYS_DEVICES privilege (see privileges(5) man page). Since PRIV_SYS_DEVICES is kind of a catch all, we're planning to introduce USCSI-specific privileges. The good news, we're porting HAL to Solaris. It should appear in hal CVS HEAD on freedesktop.org by the end of this month. We will also create a new project here on opensolaris website that concerns the issues above and much more.
