Actually, there are more than two types of customers here, but hold onto that thought; we'll get to that later. Here's the deal, plain and simple: Sun's got good gear; really good gear that stands above the competition; and I don't mind paying fair price for that gear. $750 USD is a killer price, no questions asked. That's what they got right. What they got WRONG is the old Sun thinking of using Sun proprietary HW (like 1" spud brackets) ONLY TO BE ABLE TO SKIN YOu ALIVE on the price of often essential peripherals and options. My gripes: - unbelievably unrealistic price of the 80GB disks Sun sells with the X2100 as an option - unrealistic Opteron CPU price -- it's marked up way more than it should be - the system is purposely configured with 2 x 512MB RAM by default, which is a total waste if you want more memory, like 2 or 4 GB; and THEY KNOW IT. You have basically lost the money on 1GB of RAM (2 x 512MB) if you want to buy more and are in fact being PENALIZED for GENERATING MORE BUSINESS with Sun. Sorry, but that is NOT how we're gonna play! Sun is playing in the x86/x64 arena now, so they better get their act straight or risk getting busted by Dell and HP. Again! Not to Sun: you can't charge me a decent price on the base HW, only hoping to skin me on the options, which you made proprietary so that I'd be forced to buy only from you. NO WAY, ON GENERAL PRINCIPLE. This message posted from opensolaris.org _______________________________________________ opensolaris-discuss mailing list [email protected]
