Just a bit of a followup to this.

I got in touch with the author of the Linux driver, cp2101, and he
feels that I shouldn't run into any licensing issues by using the
magic numbers / device protocol information obtained from his driver. 
Furthermore, he is open to relicensing should the need arise.

Good stuff.  Time to get to work :-)
