It is still fully supported for NFSv2 and NFSv3. The reason it isn't
supported for NFSv4 is that due to the internals of how it works makes
it incompatible with NFSv4 protocol requirements.
Coda seems to be a solution to this problem, but the current
implementation seems to be terrible and not well maintained. A proper
Solaris port would certainly be helpful here.
I'd say the correct solution would be to build on the delegation model
of NFSv4.
