I did this just the other day, for most of the reasons you mentioned. My wife finally made me give up my old Solaris test box (an Athlon 1200) so she could get the kids and their games off her computer. I'm thinking of getting a new X2 based system, but in the interest of family harmony I'm trying to delay spending the money.
With VMWare GSX being free, I figured I'd just load it up on my desktop box (Athlon XP 2500+) and put Solaris under it. I installed nv_35 without a hitch. It mostly works well, although I've run across a few minor annoyances. For one, it runs dog slow. The install with my 40x CD seemed more like a 4x. Quite often I'll get long (10 second) lockups on the guest OS, where it will just stall. There's also some wierd I/O bug that will soemtimes cause a single key hit to repeat multiple times. There's probably some setting I need to adjust for that, I haven't had a chance to look for it. If you just need a Solaris box to play/test on an infrequent basis, it works fine. I wouldn't want to try doing any ON development on it, at least not on my particular box, but as an box to explore new features (I don't get to do that at work any more), it works just fine. -spp This message posted from opensolaris.org _______________________________________________ opensolaris-discuss mailing list [email protected]
